WHAT IS THE VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN ACT?

The Violence Against Women Act, or VAWA, was created for victims of domestic abuse to give women a green card without the abuser’s knowledge. This Act was formed after the Immigration and Nationality Act to include the ability for women to obtain green cards. The Violence Against Women Act was created in 1994 and helps to give victims of child abuse, elder abuse, and domestic violence the ability to apply for a green card. To apply for a green card, the immigrant abused victim doesn’t need the cooperation of the abusive spouse, adult child, or parent. This Act allows anyone who is in unfortunate circumstances to overcome the abuse from their abuser and obtain legality to live permanently in the United States. Many immigrants who are abused are taken advantage of because they don’t have a green card of their own and the abusive person is holding it over his or her head; this Act helps to protect them. Women who are foreign tend to work in domestic help positions, as caretakers, or informal labor, which means they don’t assert their rights and they generally aren’t protected under the current laws. This act ensures their protection and allows them to not have to live under an abuser’s home just to stay in this country. Learn more about VAWA Green Cards.
